John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847) was a prolific British architect, as well as a landscape designer, town planner, artist,  furniture designer and essayist. This landscape architecture classic makes clear that these elegantly rendered designs were not intended as precise models for construction but rather as thematic examples of how enlightened architecture could enhance the dreary and unattractive structures then prevalent on country estates.

The book has 29 fine aquatints by Rudolph Ackermann featuring various types of cottages and villas (as well as a conservatory, an ice house, and a chapel), 27 of which have been hand-coloured, including the frontispiece.

The volume has been rebound in dark green straightgrain leather with a panelled design to the front and back boards in gold and blind tooling. The inside boards have matching dentelles with hand marbled endpapers, and the edges of the boards are decorated with a blind roll. All edges are gilt and the volume has five raised bands to the spine. The book is housed in a matching leather entry slipcase.
