Originally printed from woodblocks, Chiyogami papers are rooted in the courtly culture of old Kyoto and in the ukiyo-e prints and book illustrations of the Edo period.  The patterns are closely linked to textile designs, often closely mimicking the sumptuous designs found on silk kimonos.

Chiyogami has many uses.  Unlike traditional wrapping paper, it is extremely subtle and durable.  It can used be as decorative wall coverings and in a multitude of craft applications.   We use Chiyogami papers as endpapers and for covering our range of ALBUMS and BOXES

  Katazome pattern - 50% reduction

Katazome-shi paper is made using stencils and is the traditional method for printing textiles in Japan.  Papers using the same printing method have been made in Kyoto since the 17th century.

The stencils are cut by hand from paper strengthened with the fermented juice of persimmon fruit.  A resist is then stencilled on to the paper and the papers are then hand coloured.  Once the pigment is dry the paper is then washed to remove the resist and reveal the pattern. 

This ancient form of printing requires great skill and patience and the results are papers with extraordinary clarity and intensity of colour. 

There are very few makers of Katazome-shi left in Japan.
