NEW LEATHERS IN STOCK FROM THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

AVAILABLE IN-STORE AT SOUTHAMPTON ROW FROM JANUARY 2010

We are please to announce that we will be stocking in Southampton Row leathers from the Lieutard Tannery in France. For many years, three generations of the same family have been making bookbinding leathers in the tannery town of Graulhet.

They make a lovely 'Chagrin grain' goatskin and sheepskins or 'Basannes' from the sheep indigenous to the  Roquefort area of France.

They also make traditional small parchment skins, called 'Chevraux'.

BASANNES

Roquefort sheep are normally associated with the world famous cheese but these hardy animals also provide beautiful skins for bookbinding.
It is a smooth leather , not as smooth as calf, but with a slight grain reminiscent of the traditional 'Basil' grain in England.
It polishes to a lovely shine.

Sheepskin is often considered to be inferior to goatskin;   certainly  they are more economical on  price but these skins are strong and have plenty of substance making them resistant to tearing or splitting like some sheepskins.

This is a beautiful traditional leather with a totally European pedigree.
