DESIGN

Creating a design using onlays and inlays of leather

We offer a bespoke design service.

An exclusive design can be created for a book, folder, box or portfolio.  These designs are usually executed in differently coloured or textured leathers, where individual pieces are cut out to create designs which are inlaid or onlaid to the cover.  We can also inlay precious stones, metals and other materials.

TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGNS

The first stage of creating a design binding is to contact our bindery director Alison Strachan to discuss your ideas.  When she has established some pointers as to style and look our design team will come up with a suggestion which is presented as colour artwork, with paper and leather swatches, and an estimated cost.

When the design has been approved we will then begin the binding process.  A design binding may take between four and twelve weeks to execute.  Prices for leather design work start at £200 for the production of the artwork, and around £750 for a design binding.

We also design period style bindings, where the exact look and feel of a historical binding can be reproduced using our vast archive of brass handtools.  Contact Daniel Wray, the Head of our Conservation Department for more information.
