Japanese Binding with Kathy Abbott One date only - Weekend of 26th/27th September

Kathy Abbott

Kathy undertook a four year, bookbinding apprenticeship at McDermott and Chance and went on to gain a HND Bookbinding (Design) qualification at London College of Printing.  She then studied BA (Hons) Bookbinding at Roehampton and achieved her degree there in 1997 .  She also has a City and Guilds teaching qualification.  Kathy has been teaching for ten years, firstly at The Institute, Hampstead Garden Suburb, London, and then on our own courses at Shepherds .  She currently teaches at the City Literary Institute in London as well as all around the country, for the Society of Bookbinders.  She currently runs the bindery at Bernard Quaritch in London, and exhibits her binding regularly at the Flow Gallery and at other events.  She is currently writing a book on bookbinding.  Kathy brings a highly infectious enthusiasm to all her work, and is a highly talented and conscientious teacher and binder.

Gold Finishing with John Goss One date only - Weekend of 8th/9th August

John Goss

John began his five year apprenticeship with Sangorski & Sutcliffe in 1967 and has served with the company (now part of Shepherds bindery) ever since.  He trained with Stanley Bray, the nephew of George Sutcliffe and continued his career as a gold finisher in Poland St  until the S&S workshops were bought by Aspreys and amalgamated with Zaehnsdorfs in 1988.  John continued as a gold finisher in what was known as SSZ, becoming head of the department, until that company was sold to Shepherds in 1998.  He will have completed 43 years as a gold finisher in November of this year, and is probably unrivalled in the world for his technical expertise in this field.  John’s ability as a finisher, his discipline and dedication are beyond compare and it is a privilege to have him teaching for us.

Paper Conservation with Jenny Drake One date only - Weekend of 11th/12th July

Jenny Drake

Jenny did a Post Graduate course in Paper Conservation at Camberwell College, followed by a Post Graduate year at West Dean College in Book Conservation.   She then spent the following three years working in Derbyshire Record Office and the Archive Departments of Nottingham and Durham Universities.  She moved to London in 2006 and started work at Shepherds in our Conservation Department as our chief paper conservator.  She undertakes all conservation of paper there, including works of art on paper.

 Courtney Gregwah

Courtney served his bookbinding apprenticeship in Jamaica at the Jamaica Archives between 1981 and 1984.  He continued to work there until 1993 becoming workshop supervisor.  He moved to London and achieved his HND in Bookbinding at the London College of Printing between 1998 and 2000.  Courtney started working in the Shepherds bindery in 2000 whilst continuing to do a part-time class at LCP.  He now specialises in fine leather forwarding and edge gilding and is a proud practitioner of the craft of bookbinding.

 Mick Hagan

Mick served a six year apprenticeship in Bookbinding at Shaw & Sons in Sydenham between 1968 and 1974.  He continued at Shaw & Sons until 2000, during which time he studied Bookbinding and Print Finishing at London College of Printing, moving into the stationery printing department in his latter years there.  In 2000 he started working in the Shepherds bindery and specialises in fine leather forwarding.  Mick exhibits care and enthusiasm for all that he does in the bindery and displays the discipline with which he was trained in all areas of his craft.

Library Style Binding with Peter Haigh

Peter Haigh

Peter served a six year apprenticeship in bookbinding at the Lewes Press between 1962 and 1968, moving to Oliver Burridge in 1969 for five years to work as a Type Setter.  During 1975-76 he trained with Arthur Johnson at the London College of Printing, after which he was employed as a binder at Weeks, latterly Keypoint Frankie, until 1991.  He has been with us at Shepherds now for eighteen years, specialising in efficiently turning out thesis, library and account style binding, and just about everything else too!  His wealth of experience shows in everything he does, and the confidence with which he does it.

Luke Hornus

Luke studied Illustration at Kent Institute of Art & Design between 2003 and 2006, and began training with Daniel in our Conservation Department in 2006.  He is now an extremely accomplished and efficient restorer of books, both cloth and leather.

Box-making with Mark Peachey

Mark Peachey

Mark started at British Loose Leaf in 1976 as a trainee locksmith, but moved into bookbinding there in 1979, serving a five year apprenticeship.  He worked at British Loose Leaf as a bookbinder until 1994 when he moved to the Cutting and Finishing department.  In 2000 he began working in the Shepherds bindery and specialises in boxmaking, folders, slipcases and edge gilding.  Mark will show you the most efficient way of making any box or folder with a minimum of fuss.

Advanced Sewing Techniques with Janet Rowe

Janet Rowe

Janet began her career as a sewer in Watkins & Watkins, a bible factory, in 1974.  She moved to Zaehnsdorf in 1977 and worked in the sewing department there until they were taken over by Shepherds in 1998, and continues to work in our Sewing department now.  There is probably nothing that Janet does not know about paper folding, collating, gathering, and the sewing of books.  She is also an expert in handsewn headbanding, using a technique that few know nowadays.  Janet has an invaluable wealth of knowledge and many unsung skills in her repertoire including how to save endpapers, paper repairs, dustjacket repairs and so on.

Daniel Wray

Dan studied Paper Conservation at Camberwell College between 1992 and 1995.  He went on to work at the College of Arms between 1995 and 1999 and began working with Shepherds thereafter.  He runs our Conservation department and is an expert restorer of books and leather items, and renowned binder and finisher of period bindings.  Largely self-taught, Dan’s impressive skills display a sympathetic artistry that few can match. He presently teaches Book Conservation one day a week at Camberwell College.
