Kathy Abbott
Kathy undertook a four year, bookbinding apprenticeship at McDermott and Chance and went on to gain a HND Bookbinding (Design) qualification at London College of Printing. She then studied BA (Hons) Bookbinding at Roehampton and achieved her degree there in 1997 . She also has a City and Guilds teaching qualification. Kathy has been teaching for ten years, firstly at The Institute, Hampstead Garden Suburb, London, and then on our own courses at Shepherds . She currently teaches at the City Literary Institute in London as well as all around the country, for the Society of Bookbinders. She currently runs the bindery at Bernard Quaritch in London, and exhibits her binding regularly at the Flow Gallery and at other events. She is currently writing a book on bookbinding.
On this course you will learn how to make four traditional Japanese-style books, each with their own stitch pattern: four-hole, kang-xi, tortoiseshell and hemp leaf. The completed books will be housed in a bespoke-made wraparound case – 'maru-chitsu', which will be fastened with Japanese bone clasps. All materials will be supplied

Courtney Gregwah
Courtney served his bookbinding apprenticeship in Jamaica at the Jamaica Archives between 1981 and 1984. He continued to work there until 1993 becoming workshop supervisor. He moved to London and achieved his HND in Bookbinding at the London College of Printing between 1998 and 2000. Courtney started working in the Shepherds bindery in 2000 whilst continuing to do a part-time class at LCP. He now specialises in fine leather forwarding and edge gilding and is a proud practitioner of his craft.

Mick Hagan
Mick served a six year apprenticeship in Bookbinding at Shaw & Sons in Sydenham between 1968 and 1974. He continued at Shaw & Sons until 2000, during which time he studied Bookbinding and Print Finishing at London College of Printing, moving into the stationery printing department in his latter years there. In 2000 he started working in the Shepherds bindery and specialises in fine leather forwarding. Mick exhibits care and enthusiasm for all that he does in the bindery and displays the discipline with which he was trained in all areas of his craft.

Luke Hornus
Luke studied Illustration at Kent Institute of Art & Design between 2003 and 2006, and began training with Daniel in our Conservation Department in 2006. He is now an extremely accomplished and efficient restorer of books, both cloth and leather.

Derek Hood
Many years of experience in the binderies of Shepherds, Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Bayntun-Riviere have enhanced Derek's knowledge and helped him produce the high level of craftsmanship found in his award winning bindings (derekhoodbookbinding.com). He is accomplished in all aspects of the craft and particularly in the art of solid edge-gilding.

Lori Sauer
Lori Sauer did the majority of her bookbinding training at The City Lit in London under the tuition of Sally Lou Smith and David Sellars. She works as a self-employed binder, specialising in contemporary bindings and teaches regular workshops at Urchfont Manor and Salisbury. Her bindings have won various prizes and in 2001 Lori was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders.

Leather Restoration with Daniel Wray

Daniel Wray
Dan studied Paper Conservation at Camberwell College between 1992 and 1995. He went on to work at the College of Arms between 1995 and 1999 and began working with Shepherds thereafter. He runs our Conservation department and is an expert restorer of books and leather items, and renowned binder and finisher of period bindings. Largely self-taught, Dan’s impressive skills display a sympathetic artistry that few can match. He presently teaches Book Conservation one day a week at Camberwell College.
He won the prestigious Arthur Johnson medal at the 2009 Designer Bookbinders annual bookbinding competition and the Bernard Middleton prize for gold finishing at the 2010 competition.
