WYSS, Johann;

The Swiss Family Robinson or, Adventures of a Father and Mother and Four Sons in a Desert Island.

Printed for M.J.Godwin & Co.   London, 1818

The origins of this well loved story are a little obscure.

The book was written by Johann David Wyss, a professor of philosophy at Bern. He used to read Defoe's story to his children, but unlike Robinson Crusoe, Wyss' shipwreck involves a whole family and was intended  for instructional purposes as well as entertainment.  The father's influence obviously rubbed off on his son, because it was in fact Johann the younger  who first published the book in 1812 under the title Der Schweizerische Robinson.  This is the first appearance of the book under this well-known title.

The books are bound in dark brown goatskin and decorated with blind embossing and gold leaf in an elaborate style using tools typically found on early 19th century bindings.

The centre panels to the front and back boards have been additionally decorated with inlaid panels embossed with the pattern of moiré silk.  The endpapers have been made from original 19th century marble paper.

A fine example of a 'period style' binding.
