The 1866 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

CARROLL, Lewis;

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Macmillan & Co., London 1866

The book was first published in 1865, but Carroll's illustrator Tenniel objected to the quality of the printing and the edition was withdrawn.  Only 23 copies are known to survive.

This book was immediately reprinted, just in time for Christmas but with the date 1866 on the title page.

In rebinding the book, the original powder blue endpapers have been preserved.  The front endpaper has an ownership inscription dated 1865 thus verifying the book is an early issue.

The remains of the original cloth boards have also been preserved by binding them into the rear of the book.

The binding is in full light red calf, with blocks to both boards, depicting 'Alice' on the front board holding the 'White Rabbit' (see opposite) and on the back board, the 'Cheshire Cat'.

The book is housed in a leather entry slipcase.
