COURSES IN LONDON THIS SEPTEMBER

Once again we are running a diverse range of courses in our Gillingham St shop this Autumn.

Starting in September, the leather paring course is a must for anyone learning to bind in leather and Luke Hornus's course in cloth restoration is the perfect way to start repairing your own collection of much loved books.

Over the last year Jessica Palmer's paper cutting workshop has proved to be a firm favourite with our customers; likewise, the one day introduction to calligraphy is a very popular course for those wishing to hone up up their skills in decorative lettering.

Sylvia Stebbing and our new bookbinding kits:

To celebrate the launch of our Journeyman Bookbinding Kit we have reproduced the image of the bookbinder Sylvia Stebbing on the cover of the kit.

The drawing on the right was originally published in Douglas Cockerell's book Bookbinding and the Care of Books, 1901.

Stebbing was a pupil of Cockerell's in 1899 and went on to work in his bindery alongside two young binders, Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe. She went on to become a bookbinding teacher herself, her most famous pupil being Virginia Woolf.

In this drawing she is seen using a tradional sewing frame but as we do not use a sewing frame in the first exercise of our online course, we have removed the frame from the picture (the wonders of photoshop!)
